We challenged people to say “Archaeopotamus qeshta” from the first try. Turns out, saying the names of prehistoric creatures might be more difficult than discovering them. Archaeopotamus qeshta is the hippopotamus which once lived in rivers in Abu Dhabi’s Al Dhafra region during the Late Miocene, between around 7 to 7.7 million years ago.

SCIENCE TALK: DEEP TIME ABU DHABI
Location: The Yas SeaWorld Research & Rescue Center
My colleague, Dr Luca Bellucci, gave a great science talk at the Yas Seaworld Research and Rescue Center. He led the audience on a journey travelling through deep time to discover what Abu Dhabi was once like, guided by its fossils. He explored ancient seas inhabited by strange molluscs, as well as savannah landscapes once roamed by saber-toothed cats and four-tusked elephants.

I had the great honour of showing the UK Culture Minister, Ian Murray, around the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, along with Deputy British Ambassador to the UAE, Jonathan Knight .
The largest museum of its kind in the Middle East, Minister Murray was first welcomed by Peter C. Kjærgaard, Director of the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, and was then shown through the galleries and exhibitions by Dr Mark Jonathan Beech.
One of the exhibitions the Minister was shown was the Wildlife Photographer of the Year (2025), the international photography exhibition showcasing 100 wildlife images from around the world. The exhibition is a collaboration with the Natural History Museum, London — one of the UK’s most celebrated scientific and cultural institutions.
