Abstract:
In the 1980s work began on construction of the vast underground Castle Mall
shopping centre in Norwich. The associated archaeological excavation was
one of the largest of its kind in northern Europe, designed to investigate
not only the castle bailey but also pre-Conquest settlement and, for the
post-Conquest period, areas of the surrounding medieval city.
The report describes evidence for late Saxon streets, houses and graveyards;
the developing fortifications of an urban castle established before 1100;
gradual encroachment by the townspeople into the castle precinct after the
13th century; documentation relating to the ownership and development of
properties within the Castle Fee; crafts and industries associated with
these plots - notably bell-founding; a late medieval assemblage of great
significance from the barbican well including ironwork, leather waste, bird
and animal bone; and sizeable finds assemblages resulting from the steady
infilling of castle ditches with domestic and commercial refuse.
Although Parts
I and II both contain summary accounts of the faunal remains, setting them
into their wider context and including additional information on craft activities,
the scale of the data made publication of a separate and more specialised
report on the faunal remains desirable and this is published here as Part
III.

Beech, M.J. 2004. In the
Land of the Ichthyophagi: Modelling fish exploitation in the Arabian Gulf
and Gulf of Oman from the 5th millennium BC to the Late Islamic period
- Abu Dhabi Islands Archaeological Survey Monograph 1. British
Archaeological Reports International Series S1217. ISBN 1841715778. Price
£ 39.00 UK pounds. xxi + 293 pages; 126 figures, maps, plans, drawings,
photographs; 232 tables; 8 Appendices of data, remains and sites.
Fishing forms an
important activity in many societies throughout the world today and played
a significant role in the life and subsistence of many prehistoric societies.
Past archaeological research on fishing has often tended to concentrate
on particular sites or chronological periods. This study aims to adopt
an inter-disciplinary approach to model regional interactions between
coastal communities and their environment. The geographical framework
for this study is the Arabian Gulf/Gulf of Oman, with a particular focus
on the southern Gulf region and present day coastline of the United Arab
Emirates. The environmental and archaeological background to the region
is considered first and modern fisheries data, as well as ethnographic
data relating to traditional fisheries is presented. An evaluation is
carried out of all the archaeological evidence for the adoption of particular
fisheries technology. The principal data forming the basis for this study
are 23 archaeological fish bone assemblages from sites located throughout
the Arabian Gulf/Gulf of Oman. The chronological focus is from the 5th
millennium BC to the Late Islamic period. In order to comprehend the regional
variation in fisheries, sites were selected on the basis that they represented
a variety of site types in different environments scattered throughout
the region. This research provides for the first time a detailed insight
into the status of past fisheries resources in the region as well as an
insight into the fishing strategies utilised by the early coastal inhabitants
of the Gulf during the course of the past 7000 years. The works
special focus is on the use of biometrical techniques to enable size reconstruction
of economically important fish groups. The overall aim of this research
(the first in a planned series of Abu Dhabi Islands Archaeological Survey
Monographs) is to consider the interactions between the goals of the coastal
societies, their fishing strategies and environment; the work overall
goes some way towards addressing some of the key questions of relevance
to the archaeology of south-east Arabia.

Synopsis:
The Wadi Faynan is a harshly beautiful and desertic landscape in southern
Jordan, situated between the hyper-arid deserts of the Wadi 'Arabah and
the rugged and wetter Mountains of Edom. "Archaeology and Desertification"
presents the results of the Wadi Faynan Landscape Survey, an inter-disciplinary
study of landscape change undertaken in the Wadi Faynan by a team of archaeologists
and geographers with the goal of contributing to present-day desertification
debates by providing a long-term perspective on the relationship between
environmental change and human history. The Wadi Faynan was the focus
for some of the earliest farming in the Near East, and the earliest metallurgy,
and in Roman times was a centre for copper and lead mining. The project
reveals how past communities of farmers, shepherds, and miners managed
their challenging environment, the solutions they developed, their successes
and failures, and their short- and long-term environmental impacts. The
richness of the palaeoclimatic, archaeological and palaeoecological data
reveals an environmental/cultural history of complex pathways, synergies,
and feedbacks operating at many different geographical scales, rates,
and intensities. The project's findings on the complexity of past and
present people:environment relations in the Wadi Faynan affirm the power
of inter-disciplinary landscape archaeology to contribute significantly
to the desertification debate. With global warming likely to threaten
the lives of millions of people in the semi-arid and arid lands that comprise
over a third of the planet through the course of this century, with potentially
dire consequences for adjacent populations in better-watered regions,
understanding the complexity of past responses to aridification has never
been more urgent.

Synopsis:
Documenting the results of some ten years of fieldwork, this volume explores
the prehistoric occupation of a small valley near Broom, on the Bedfordshire
gravels. It traces a biography of the landscape from the later Mesolithic
through to the Iron Age, a sequence that saw profound changes in the character,
scale and temporality of occupation. Undertaken in advance of gravel extraction,
the scale of the fieldwork reported here made it possibe to track not
only the sequence of occupation, but also how prehistoric communities
encountered, appropriated or ignored the 'archaeology' of their time.
Set against sequences from across southern England, this work sheds important
light on the relationship between local histories and broader processes,
and on the complex and geographically varied ways in which the past itself
was understood in the past.
