For more details click here.
Abstract:
This paper considers how the Stone Age is depicted in museums within the Gulf Cooperation Council region, namely in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, UAE and the Sultanate of Oman. Despite the concept of 'Jahiliyah', i.e. the "Age of Ignorance of the Arabs in the pre-Islamic age", archaeological research over the past 50 years has demonstrated that this region indeed has a rich prehistoric past. Museum displays of the prehistory of the Gulf region have, however, tended to concentrate on later prehistoric periods such as the Bronze and Iron Age, when cultural and economic contacts linked the Gulf region with the ancient civilisations of Mesopotamia, Persia, and the Indus Valley. In this contribution we consider the Stone Age, from the Palaeolithic to Neolithic period. An intensification of research on the Stone Age during the past 20 years or so has resulted in major new discoveries. These finds, together with the latest DNA research, demonstrates that one of the corridors that our early human ancestors took out of Africa was through the Arabian peninsula. Whilst there may not be total agreement on the precise route and timing of these events, there has been a growing public interest in the origins of our ancestors. How this story is now being told is something that will be explored and discussed.
